On Sunday, 6 June they achieved their goal when the foundation launched its first fleet of hand made dinghies at the Vero Beach Municipal Marina with the youngsters at the helm. “We launched five finished boats with children aboard,” said Dan Thomas, vice chairman of the foundation. Youths can participate in a week - long sailing course to learn the ins and outs of water safety and navigating their own vessel. The Youth Sailing Foundation, which started earlier this year, promotes and oper- ates a sustainable sailing program for local youths, ages 6 to 16, using 8 - foot - long Opti- mist Sailing Dinghy. The building program gives kids creative control of the construction process. Overseen by parents and experts in the field, children assemble a pre - cut okume plywood boat kit. It takes children about 40 hours, spanning two or three months, to complete the 77 - pound dinghy. The kits cost about $1,400 which include spars, rigging and a sail. “By building these dinghies, the kids develop a good sense of camaraderie and accomplishment,” Thomas said. “It’s so exciting to see the look on the kids’ faces once they’ve completed the dinghy and are out on the water.” Vero Beach resident Troy Visser and his son, Randy, 9, built a dinghy through the program and Randy’s sister, Julia, 12, will soon start construction on her own dinghy after she saw how much fun her father and brother had.“They are so excited to start classes,” Visser said of his two chil- dren.“They are very interested in learning how to sail.” Organizations such as the Vero Beach Yacht Club and Vero Beach Power Squad- ron donate money for grants for children who cannot afford to buy their own kits.“We don’t want to leave any child out,” said Charlie Pope, foundation chairman. “We want to create a bonding experience for all the children and their parents. That’s our goal, and it’s worked out so well.” The sailing classes will be taught by certified professionals. Youth will learn all about for and maintain their boats. They will also learn how to recover if their dinghy should capsize. The instruction the children will receive usually costs several hundred dollars, but donations from businesses and residents made it free. Students only have to purchase a $15 textbook. THANK YOU!! Hello VBPS Members, Associates and Friends, As we approach the holiday season, I believe we are completing another very successful year at our Vero Beach Power Squadron. I wish to thank the Bridge, the Executive Committee, all the Committee Chairpersons and Committee mem- bers and all of you members for making this year such a success. One way we can judge our success was our recently submitted our “Doing It Right” (DIR) 2010 Award Worksheet to National in which we are judged in 25 categories. The goal is to be able to answer “yes” to 15 questions/categories in 2010, 16 in 2011, 18 in 2012 and 20 in 2013. If a squadron meets these goals, it will be able to display a “Doing It Right” logo on its newsletter. I reviewed the worksheet with your Executive Committee and I am happy to report that we an- swered “YES” 23 times. The first of two questions we answered “no” to was “Recruit 50% of its new members from your ABC3 Classes or Seminars?” We missed this one because you are bringing in so many friends and neighbors that we have grown year - to - date by over 17%! The other question we answered “no” to was “Attend your District Fall Conference with 80% of your delegates?” We only had 62% of our delegates. You see, as our membership increases we get more delegates. There was also a twenty - sixth question concerning any addi- tional activity that should be considered for credit. Here we explained how your VBPS maintains a high profile within the community. We listed the town events and charitable organizations we support. We also described how we use the Boarman USPS National Youth Poster Contest to help let the community know what we are all about. There was another question/category that I would like to see added to the DIR program. It was something we discussed way back last January at the Change of Watch. That is “Did we have FUN this year while we were helping to make boat- ing safe, supporting our community and supporting each other at our squadron activities?” The answer needs to be YES for us to have had a truly successful year. Since this is the last article I will be writing for the “Nautical News” as your Com- mander I want to sincerely thank each of you for your support this year and ask to support your new Bridge and Committees in 2011. We are looking forward to the Annual Meeting, the Holiday Dinner Dance, our Ladies Christmas Lunch at the Vero Beach Yacht Club and the Vero Beach Boat Parade which all leads us up to the Change of Watch. See the back page for the dates and times. I certainly hope to see all of you at these very important and exciting events. Reservations are a must so PLEASE place them early. Our Co - op Charting Group has been very active. Actually, they have done a great job this year so I have convinced Lt. Harold R. Leh, Jr. AP to once again lead these extraordinary men next year. Thank you dear, oh, I mean Harold. with his committee all year. They have been working very hard to make our boats safe and to also teach us about safety on the water. Many of our group re- turn to their summer homes and inspect boats there. They are always working. By the time you read this, Lt. Glenn Rose, S, will have completed his second Vero Beach Boat Show this year. He has done a fine job setting up our booth and making sure all the volunteers are prepared. Again, members!! If you have been away, here is a brief idea on what’s been hap- pening at VBPS. Over 100 members and guests attended the Shrimp Boil hosted by PC Ed Dreher,AP. The fare - South Carolina’s favorite mixture of shrimp, sausage, corn and potatoes combined with beer, wine and sodas. It was a grand affair and we hope Ed does it again next year. The Halloween Pot Luck Party (10/31/10) some said was the best Halloween get together so far. This year Janet and Harold Leh orchestrated the festivity. Most members in attendance were in costume. Prizes were awarded for best costumes. Special thanks to Larry and Judy Lott, Cdr.Jim and Lt.Judy Ward, Lt/C Janet and Lt. Har- old Leh, Jan Paul, Barbara Scully, Sheree and Doug Gough, Charlie and Chris Pope and P/C John Spilman, SN. They were the support team who put time in at the booth on 11 - 6 & 11 - 7 pro- moting the VBPS at the Rotary Club Nautical Flea Market at Riverside Park. Proudly displayed next to the booth was the VBPS Optimist Dingy, which was also displayed at the general meet- ing held on 11/9. A reception was held in honor of Past District Commander Joe Leitz, Senior Navigator on Saturday 11 - 13, who passed recently. Joe was, among other things well know as Vero’s TOP Vessel Safety Check (VSC) Inspector with over 1000 VSC's under his belt. He did a lot for the VBPS over the many years and will be missed. Jane and Jack Knauss hosted the Brooks Pork Roast, with support from fellow VBPS members (Spilman, Carr, Joslin, Leh, Ebstein, Wisniewski, Scott, Reinhart, Peschio, and McCurdy). Scrumptious appetizers provided by the attendees were consumed during the happy hour. The main course consisted of pork roast grilled and smoked on an open fire to perfection. Friday Night Social quarter hosts, Mary Lichty - Nelson, Sue Hamel and Jim Brown, Ed and Shirley Carr, and John and Barb Spilman, are to be commended for there efforts, in encour- aging the members to step up to the plate and give it their all, so we could indulge on the hors d'oeuvres while we socialized with our beverage of choice. Notable general meeting guest speakers included Charlie Pope on “Omni Dinghy”; John Gill on “Locking Thru”; Patrick Lahey on “Triton Mini Subs”; a video “Cruising with the VBPS” narrated by Barbara Epstein; “Artifacts in the Ocean” by Captain Bob; a short talk on the “Sheriffs Marine Division looks for volunteers”; and “Wooden Boat manufacturing” by Matt and Maureen Mathewson. Coming your way is the Holiday Dinner Dance at the VBYC on 12/12/2010 and, of course, the Change of Watch scheduled for 1/9/2011, also at the VBYC. Thank Marilyn and P/R/C Ellis D. Don't wait for a special day or ceremony to say thank you. If you 'bundle' or think you can accumulate your 'thank yous' it actually makes them less meaningful. Discipline your- self to say 'thank you' now, while the iron is hot. If you have fallen behind in your 'thank yous', write a note , not E - - ball to eye - ball.' Make that call, it is never to late to say to make someone feel appreciated. It will pay off in the long run.
