Winter/Spring 2004 “Winter Magic” Concert a Success On December 7, 2003 the American Youth Symphonic Orchestra, American Youth Concert Orchestra, and American Youth String Ensemble performed their opening concert at Fairfax High School to an audience of over 500. The first group to take the stage was the String Ensemble, a 65-piece ensemble of students ranging in age from 6 to 13. Led under the masterful hand of Cheri Collins, who made her debut as conductor of the ensemble that afternoon, the String Ensemble took off with exuberant energy. Delving first into Leyden’s Serenade for String Orchestra they next glided into Handel’s And He shall Purify , trounced through Meyer’s Fiddler’s Stew , and dazzled audience members with the shimmering colors of Rimsky Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol , an arrangement by Sandra Dackow. The ensemble’s strong sound and confident playing underscored the hard work and effort that went into preparing for their first concert. Next on stage was the Concert Orchestra, directed by J.D. Anderson. Beginning with the first movement of Borodin’s Symphony No. 2 , the Concert Orchestra showed its command of the music through careful and thoughtful playing. After Barnes’ melodic Yorkshire Ballad came Cruft’s Traditional Hornpipe Suite Painting Pictures through Music Fun Fact: Vivace! Building Relationships This season our chamber ensembles have been hard at work rehearsing, performing, and Education and Outreach Efforts This season AYP Orchestras members have been appearing in the public eye at a number of occasions—chamber groups have been sent to perform at the prestigious Cosmos Club in Washington to the National Museum of Women in the Arts in D.C. Recently, members were invited to participate in an AYP Principal cellist Alicia Ward helps a student at an Instrument Petting Zoo (above), and receives media attention (right) in an impromptu performance at the event.
